With a Finite Element Analysis using fluid regions, IGB helped a major shipyard solve fatigue issues in the fueltank of one of their designs.

One of the world’s leading shipyards encountered fatigue problems with the tank of some their container vessels. Some modifications were incorporated in the design without satisfactory results. Therefore it was decided that a finite element analysis on the dynamic behavior of the tanks was required. IGB was requested to deliver this analysis

Based on the line plans and section views of the hull, a finite element model was created by IGB. First off, the situation with empty tanks was analyzed. Secondly, the filled tanks were simulated, using so called fluids regions in Femap. With this feature the natural frequencies in filled and partly filled conditions were analyzed.

The results were summarized in a report and were sent to the customer together with the models as input for a design change.
